Economic evaluation of heat-pump-assisted distillation systems

Heat-pump-assisted distillation columns such as the vapor recompression column (VRC), self-heat recuperation column (SHRC), and heat integration column (HIDiC) have attracted attention in industry because of their strong impact on energy savings in chemical processes. Compared to conventional distillation columns, these systems have the advantage of reducing operation and construction costs, but little work has been done to evaluate the cost of these systems. This study employed the commercial process simulator Aspen Plus® to evaluate energy saving and economic performances. The heat-pump-assisted distillation distillation systems were economically superior to the conventional process for separation of a propylene-propane mixture. In particular, a thermally optimized HIDiC reduced energy consumption and total annual cost by 64 and 56% respectively in comparison with the conventional distillation process.
