The role of gamma-ray irradiation on the electrical characteristics of polyethersulfone (PES) is studied via thermally stimulated current (TSC) measurements. The PES film used has a thickness of 125μm. A picoammeter measures the d.c. conduction current. TSC is measured under short-circuited condition for which the samples are poled at a certain poling temperature and period. Gamma-ray irradiation is conducted in air at room temperature with a dose rate of about 30Gy/h to a total dose of 30kGy. The results show that, when PES is irradiated by gamma-rays, d.c. conduction current and TSC decrease. The reason is that the progress of crosslinking induced by the irradiation hinders the transport of ions.
