Effect of plasma polymer surface layer on the space charge formation in polyethylene

The authors reported previously (1987) that a plasma-polymer surface layer deposited on a polyethylene film suppresses electron injection into polyethylene. Here, they report the influence of polar groups existing in the plasma polymer on the injection-suppressing effect. The TPC (thermal pulse current) response from polyethylene films coated with plasma-copolymerized ethylene/allylamine layers on the anode side was found to be three to five times greater than that from polyethylene films coated with plasma-polymerized ethylene on the anode side or base polyethylene. Mechanisms that may explain this finding are examined.
