Three new block copolymers for preparing polyelectrolyte coatings on electrode surfaces are described. These copolymers are shown to adopt microphase-separated structures in the solid state in which hydrophibic and hydrophobic blocks form discrete domains. The details of the domain morphology appear to determine the ion-exchange behavior and electrochemical response of the coatings. The wide range of microphase-separated structures available with coatings cast from block copolymers offers attractive possibilities in studies of morphological control of coating behavior.
