Ergonomic evaluation of visual artifacts in stereoscopic display devices

Stereoscopic (3D) displays with glasses can be classified into two methods: the time-multiplexing and the spatial-multiplexing methods. While viewing the former during smooth pursuit and saccadic eye movements, an observer perceives artifacts: flicker, pseudo-parallax, a phantom array. While viewing the later, an observer perceives artifacts: pseudo-parallax, binocular rivalry, low-resolution. These artifacts would affect the observer's safe and comfort of viewing. In this study, visual artifacts when viewing 3D displays were examined with physiological changes, including depth sensation and the subjective symptoms of visual fatigue.
