We developed a system for evaluation of hip dislocation in a patient after total hip arthroplasty The system measures contact pressures at the hip joint surface and enables surgeons to check the stability of the installed artificial hip joint during surgery. It can also estimate the possibility of dislocation after surgery by using a 4D muscle model. First, we manufactured the pressure sensor that forms the artificial joint. Then we installed eight small pressure sensors to the spherical head component which is part of the ball-socket joint at the hip. Next, we constructed the software for recording and visualizing the detected pressure, which was recorded every 1 ms and the pressure distribution displayed in the 3D computer graphics in real-time. The system enables the direction of the pressure to be intuitively recognized in 3-dimensions. Then using this system we conducted measurements during total hip arthroplasty Although it requires some improvement in its measurement accuracy, this system has possibilities for acquiring information about the situation of an installed artificial hip joint in real-time. Finally development of the calibration method should enable more accurate measurements; thus, effectively making it a useful tool for selecting the appropriate implant to be fitted to a patient or for estimating the risk of complications after surgery.
