A theory of pulse propagation in a diffuse medium recently developed by Ishimaru [J. Opt. Soc. Am. 68, 1045 (1978)] predicts that the effective velocity of the diffuse light in a random distribution of scatterers is (formula presented) of the light velocity in the homogeneous medium surrounding the scatterers. We present an experimental study of this reduced effective velocity of diffuse light using a picosecond Kerr-effect ultrafast shutter. The results show that the slowing rate is close to the theoretically predicted value of (formula presented).
