Facilitated transport of nitrogen and acetylene in poly(vinylcyclopentadienylmanganese) membrane

The authors have successfully prepared a transparent and flexible polymer membrane from the copolymer of octylmethacrylate and vinylmethylcyclopentadienylmanganese (CpMn), which has one unsaturated coordination site even in the solid membrane state to bind molecular nitrogen and acetylene selectively, rapidly, and reversibly. Facilitated transport of nitrogen and acetylene in this membrane are described. The binding equilibrium curves for nitrogen and acetylene obeyed a typical Langmuir's isotherm. Rapid and reversible nitrogen and acetylene binding to the CpMn residue in the membrane were confirmed by laser flash photolysis of the coordinated nitrogen and acetylene. The advantages of this membrane are that the fixed carrier maintains its rapid and reversible binding capability of the penetrant even after the fixation in the membrane and that ad- and de-sorption rate and equilibrium constants of the penetrant at the carrier site can be evaluated in situ.
