A fractographic study has been performed for the fatigue fracture in butt-welded joints of an aluminum alloy, A5083-O, frequently used for low temperature applications. Axial load-controlled fatigue tests were conducted either at room temperature or at 77K; the fracture surface of specimens were examined with a scanning-electron microscope. The mechanism of fatigue fracture was analyzed by determining the crack plane and crack propagation direction by the etch pit technique.
