N2 - A fiber-optic sensor for measuring distributed external forces applied along an optical fiber is presented. This method is based on two-beam interferometry which permits evaluation of positions and magnitudes of local mode-conversion caused by external forces. In this experiment the resolvable length was within 0.5 m for a 100 m fiber. A mode power coupling coefficient of up to 4×10-6 m-1 was also observed. This method offers many advantages for a multiplexing fiber-optic sensor.
