A field experiment for a digital ship earth station system was successfully performed from April to July 1984, using the Inmarsat Indian Ocean satellite (Intelsat V satellite with maritime communication subsystem). The authors outline the experimental setups and present the test results. The link parameters of the designed system are also discussed on the basis of the data obtained. The test results indicate that the system, using rate-1/2 Viterbi decoding for forward error correction and 16-kb/s adaptive predictive coding for voice transmission, can provide a saving of satellite power and/or a reduction in the size of shipborne antenna, as well as offering a wide variety of services.
