A knowledge representation system named FBSS has been developed as a kernel of flexible computer vision systems. The FBSS provides a frame-like data structure and a standard built-in search mechanism. Hierarchical model definitions required in the vision systems can be easily described by using the frames. For matching between object models and observed patterns, the built-in search mechanism can start from an arbitrary hierarchical level designated by an external program. An application to 3-D vision is illustrated.
