NTT research laboratories has constructed a testbed called GEMnet to be used for research experiments on a global scale. GEMnet has been developed as a medium for carrying out global research collaboration, particularly in fields where network complexity and security problems preclude effective use of the Internet. To construct a network that can respond to a wide variety of needs in global research collaboration, and to support tie-ups with partners that are robust technologically, NTT's research labs need to collaborate with U.S. partners engaged in the highest level of next-generation Internet research. The laboratories are working positively with their partners to achieve these ends. Research work is now moving forward in collaborations between NTT and robust partners, partners that identified by linking GEMnet with the U.S.'s STAR-TAP, which is the international interconnection point of the network for next-generation Internet research experiments, and with networks such as MREN and Canada's CA * net2. This paper presents an overview of NTT's policy concerning global research collaboration over GEMnet from the standpoints of business strategy and technology, and of specific collaboration projects being undertaken on the basis of the policy.
