BACKGROUND: Several studies reported that lactotripeptides have both anti-hypertensive and vasodilative effects. high-intensity resistance exercise has been shown to increase arterial stiffness, which is closely linked to elevated blood pressure. the purpose of the present study was to test the hypothesis that ltp supplementation attenuates resistance exercise-induced arterial stiffness and blood pressure responses. METHODS: twenty-two healthy men (24.0±0.4 years old) participated in the present study. the participants performing an acute bout of resistance exercise (50 repetitions) before and after which they ingested either placebo (N.=11) or lactotripeptides (N.=11). heart rate and carotid femoral pulse wave velocity were assessed before, 1 and 48 h after exercise. at the same time, brachial systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure in both the exercised and nonexercised arm were also assessed. RESULTS: in the placebo group, systolic blood pressure in the exercised arm and carotid femoral pulse wave velocity were significantly increased at 1 h and returned to baseline at 48 h. Compared with the placebo group, these elevations were significantly attenuated in the lactotripeptides group. Heart rate, systolic blood pressure in the nonexercised arm, and diastolic blood pressure in both the exercised and nonexercised arms were not different throughout the experiment between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that lactotripeptides supplementation before and after exercise attenuates the increase in both aortic arterial stiffness and systolic blood pressure in healthy men.
