We synthesized hydrogen-bonded supramolecular columnar liquid crystals composed of carboxy-cores and surrounding pyridyl-dendrons. The thermal polarized optical microscope (TPOM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies indicated that the 1:3 molar ratio mixtures of tricarboxy-triphenylene 1 and pyridyl-dendron 3 self-organized into a hexagonal columnar liquid crystal, and the single triphenylene was located in the center of the surrounding three dendrons. On the other hands, the complex of trimesic acid 2 and pyridyl-dendron 3 stabilized in a 1:2 molar ratio via hydrogen bonds, and stacked up into a supramolecular columnar liquid crystal.
