This paper proposes a method to generate two-dimensional (2D) arrays of droplets without precise pipetting or pumping. The 2D arrays of droplets are powerful tools for high throughput and low-cost biological assays or medical diagnosis. Here, such arrays are generated by simply introducing aqueous solution and immiscible solvent into an array of connected circular wells; the aqueous solution impregnated in the array are split into droplets in every single well by injecting the immiscible solvent. Droplet generation was investigated according to well geometry. Droplet array including 2D concentration gradient of two inks are demonstrated to show applicability to biological assays.
