Dispersion-flattened fiber spans with a single mode fiber (SMF) and a slope-compensating dispersion compensation fiber (SCDCF) have been demonstrated as fiber link for 40 Gbit/s wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) transmission. However, massive dense WDM (DWDM) transmission may cause significant interchannel crosstalk due to fiber nonlinearities. The impact of nonlinear penalty due to increase of the channel count in a 0.8 nm-spaced SMF/SCDCF-based 40-Gbit/s DWDM system is investigated. It is shown that the performance degradation for the increase of WDM channel count is not so large and that the penalty due to nonlinear crosstalk was <1 dB even in 16-channel transmission over 1500 km.
