抄録

The cause and prevention of the 2eV band observed in fibers used in a radiation environment are discussed. Remanent stress had no effect in the 2eV band. The cause seems to be some sorts of defects which exist near the interface between the core and the clad glasses. Irradiation of gamma -rays to fibers pre-treated with hydrogen seems to terminate all the seeds of the 2eV band by reacting them with hydrogen atoms chemically. Fibers thus treated showed no growth of the 2eV band in subsequent gamma -ray irradiation.
