N2 - After documenting the spread of high-speed economic growth associated with rapid industrialization in East Asia, this essay elaborates on the Okita idea of a "flying geese pattern of development" in this region and tries to analyze the reasons accounting for that pattern. Major factors analyzed in the essay are transformations in policy, high levels of investment, and regional externalities. Among the key concepts used in this essay are the virtuous circle of investment, exports, and imports, and the ideas of an optimal degree of diversity, and an optimal technological gap. Finally, the concept of "Japanese inputs" in East Asian development is put forth and the role of Saburo Okita as a channel and assimilator of knowledge is discussed.
