Measurement of 3VOC emission rates from adhesives using calcium silicate boards

    We have developed measurement method of VOC emission rate from adhesive by using diffusion property of calcium silicate board. In this paper, we measured emission rates of 3VOC (Toluene, m-Xylene, Ethylbenzene) from four kinds of adhesives for various additive amount conditions. For all adhesives and for all VOCs, the emission rates of 1 day later were the highest of all, and then, they decreased as time goes by. The measured values of emission rate were reproducible after 3 days or later. Besides, the emission rates from adhesive U (Polyurethane resin) and S (Chloroprene rubber) showed similar exponential decay tendency. On the other hand, the emission rates from adhesive E (Epoxide resin) and W (Ethylene vinyl acetate emulsion copolymerization) hardly attenuated since 3 days later. Content and emission late of 3VOC were correlated after 3 days or later. However, for adhesive U and S, they didn't be correlated until 5 or 7 days later. Additionally, the more VOCs were added, the higher emission rate was.
