Measuring the influence to existing utilities of nearby trenchless operations

    This paper presents two case studies on the use of optical fiber technology for remote monitoring of civil engineering structures. The first case measures settlement and cross-sectional deformation of an existing 3m-diameter cable tunnel when a 10 m-diameter shield boring machine was passing beneath it with a clearance of approximately 3m. The second case measures deformation of a PVC pipe which was installed for measuring ground deformation since this pipe is regarded to reflect the ground deformation when a 7m-diameter shield machine drives 2m below the 10cm outer diameter PVC pipe. In both cases, the optical fiber technology provided continuous measurements of tunnel settlement along the longitudinal direction and deformation of the PVC cross-section. These case studies are expected to be very valuable material for designing or maintaining pipelines and tunnels.
