The mechanism of the growth of the 2ev band in gamma -ray irradiated pure silica core optical fibers was investigated. The growth of the 2ev band and that of the non-bridging oxygen hole center were found to be proportional, which indicate a close relation between the 2ev band and HBOHC. A shift to longer wavelength was found for the 2ev band in high OH fiber during heat-treatment. During hydrogen treatment, the absorption loss at 2ev decreases faster in low OH fiber than in high OH fiber. This is considered to be due to the presence of hydrogen bond between the NBOHC and a nearby hydroxyl group.
