Microchannel array for long term monitoring of multicellular filamentous cyanobacterium with controlled perfusion culture

We designed and fabricated a microfluidic system, which has 128 microchannels for observation of muliticellular filamentous cyanobacteria, Anabaena sp. PCC 7120, under microscope for a long term with controlled perfusion culture. Using automated programming, we were able to monitor cell differentiation and growth of many filaments at the same time in this device. We are able to inject medium or reagent individually into each channel at any time during the experiment. Since more than 100 different filaments were cultured for 96 hours continuously, we succeeded in observing their morphogenesis clearly.
