Narratives are pre-existent socially accepted forms of interpretation which both render possible and restrict the strategies of interpretation of individual texts. Even though narratives shape the expressible in a Foucaultian sense, they have so far been widely neglected by linguistic discourse analysis. In this paper we discuss data-driven methods in the analysis of narratives. Using 3376 stories of the first sexual encounter as an example, we propose using hierarchical n-gram-collocation-graphs as a means of visualizing the complex co-occurrence-structure that forms narratives on the textual surface.
