New method to evaluate the effective diffusivity in an oscillatory flow through a bifurcating airway model

A method based on Laplace transforms to evaluate mean effective diffusivity (Deff) in oscillatory flows with a complex geometry such as a bifurcation is proposed. Numerical simulation is performed to confirm the reliability of this method. The method is then used through a model of symmetrical bifurcation with branching angle of 70° and curvature ratios of δ = 1/8. The carbon dioxide concentration at two sections were measured with infrared absorption sensors. Deff does not show highly peaked characteristics because the secondary flow is not fully developed.
