when large-diameter lined water supply lines is constructed in deep underground, the reliable design of the inner steel pipes should take into account the groundwater pressure. In this paper, the buckling behavior of ring-stiffened pipes was studied and buckling design was investigated. According to numerical analysis, the buckling behavior of stiffened pipes under external pressure is very different from that of general cylindrical shells; the effects of flexural rigidity and the spacing of rings are of vital importance to buckling behavior. Based on the results obtained, conclusions were drawn as follows: 1) Buckling types of stiffened pipes under external pressure were verified as general and local buckling of shells, 2) General and local buckling types can be determined by the second moment of area and the spacing of ring stiffeners, 3) Buckling design of ring-stiffened pipes can be improved by considering buckling behavior.
