On-line maintenance techniques have been developed on the basis of the autonomous decentralization concept and applied to the local area network ADL (Autonomous Decentralized Loop Network). In the network system, BIT (Built-In Tester) distributed in each NCP (Network Control Processor) is uniform and has autonomous functions not only for local fault diagnosis but also for address duplication check and fault information communication. The BIT information is independently broadcast and is intercepted by EXT (External Tester) in CU (Computer Unit) connected to ADL. EXT integrates the BIT information, recognizes the total system structure, synthesizes faults at system level and communicates with repairmen. BIT and EXT have autonomy to perform these maintenance functions without directing to and being directed by the others. Any fault in BIT and EXT is not propagated through the network. No NCP nor CU need stop its operation during maintenance of the other NCP's, CU's and the loops. ADL with BIT and EXT functions has been applied, and the validity of BIT and EXT has been shown.
