    Efficient and feasible control algorithms are proposed based on digital controllers which improve dynamic responses in multiarea load frequency control systems. The behavior of the power system consists of a group of power source loads within each area, and the transmission lines are expressed by a set of linear differential equations. Next, the system is digitalized at an appropriate sampling period by using numerical approximation methods for synthesizing several types of digital controllers. In determining optimal control laws on a microprocessor, the minimum time and the minimum energy are selected as the performance indices, and the optimal regulator is also investigated for comparison. The classical two-area power system is studied in relation to the response of an interconnected power system using the new control algorithm to improve the response obtained by a conventional control strategy.
