Organic modification of interlayer surface of a Ruddlesden-Popper phase H2La2Ti3O10 (HLaTi) with n-alkylamine and n-alcohols was conducted. In terms of intercalation behavior of HLaTi, the reaction of HLaTi with n-butylamine did not occur in distilled THF solvent and the addition of water to the system was required for successful intercalation of n-butylamine into HLaTi. The reaction of HLaTi and n-butylammonium cations occurred, suggesting that the intercalation proceeded through ion-exchange mechanism. For interlayer surface modification with n-alcohol, although no direct reaction of HLaTi with n-propanol occurred, the use of intercalation compound of HLaTi with n-butylamine as an intermediate led to the formation of the n-propoxy derivative of HLaTi. In addition, the alcohol-exchange-type reactions between the n-propoxy derivative of HLaTi and (n-alcohols n-butanol, n-octanol, n-decanol and n-dodecanol) occurred to form various n-alkoxy derivatives.
