We report here the oxidative polymerization of 2,6-dimethylphenol in water to form poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) by a catalyst. 2,6-Dimethylphenol was stirred under oxygen in alkaline water with an alkaline resistant copper complex catalyst such as copper ethylenediamine complex.The polymerization gave the high molecular weight polymer. Property of the obtained polymer and the reaction mechanism will be also discussed. UV-vis spectral change(λ max = 550 nm) gave the rate constant of phenol coordination of 5.0 × 10-5 M / sec. Oxygen uptake was 66 ml which agreed the calculated value.
