Phase-shifting transformer application to power-flow adjustment for large-scale PV penetration

    Recently, the number of PVs (photovoltaic power) being installed has increased; however, the outputs of the PV systems are unstable. This paper proposes the use of PSTs (phase-shifting transformers), and develops the concept of LPS (line power-flow sensitivity) for power-flow control and fuel cost through a day. LPS is an index for operators to calculate the changes in the line power flow, from the phase-shifting angles of the PSTs. With LPS, optimal phase-shifting angles that meet the power-system requirements can be calculated. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed using a modified IEEE 118 bus system model, in which the quantity of PVs is set to about 15% of the demand.
