The formation and photo-induced alignment of ultrathin films consisting of small molecular dyes and polyelectrolytes using the alternate solution adsorption technique are described. The small molecular chromophoric dyes were chosen to have sufficient charge density and photoisomerizable azo functional groups. The molecular assembly process of individual polyion-dye pairs were investigated by a number of surface sensitive techniques, including quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), ellipsometry, UV spectroscopy, X-ray reflectometry, XPS, AFM, and surface plasmon spectroscopy. Correlation was made on the effect of film formation parameters to the overall film quality and layer ordering.
