N2 - The geminate ion recombination and the formation process of solute excited states in solutions of biphenyl were studied in cyclohexane by means of picosecond pulse radiolysis with absorption and emission spectroscopies. The time-dependent behavior of the biphenyl anion was analyzed using diffusion theory in the solute-solvent system. By applying this analysis to the time-dependent fluorescence from excited states of biphenyl, yields of the excited states through various formation processes were deduced. Also, yield of excited states of cyclohexane in the absence of solutes was estimated.
