Li-ion cells were dismantled and leached by H 2SO 4 in reducing condition extracting 98% and 99% of cobalt and lithium, respectively. Iron and aluminum were completely precipitated as hydroxides. Solvent extraction allowed to separate selectively cobalt from other metals. Around 80% of total lithium was recovered as a carbonate with a purity > 95%. Around 95% of total cobalt was precipitated as carbonate with a higher purity if solvent extraction had been performing before. A hydrometallurgical flowchart for the valorization of spent lithium ion accumulators was proposed and analyzed in two different variants: with and without solvent extraction. Flowchart containing solvent extraction was more economically feasible but both other options could be feasible feeding the plant with right amount of waste. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 7th European Congress of Chemical Engineering-7 and 19th International Congress of Chemical and Process Engineering CHISA (Prague, Czech Republic 8/28/2010-9/1/2010).
