Quench propagation velocities in an epoxy-impregnated nb3sn superconducting winding model

We have been developing a computer code to describe quench process in multisection, epoxy-impregnated superconducting solenoids. This code relies on one experimental input: field and current dependent transverse (turn-to-turn) quench propagation velocity. In this paper, quench propagation velocity data, both longitudinal and transverse, for a Nb3Sn superconducting winding model are presented. The longitudinal velocity results agree well with those computed by an analytical model. The correlation between transverse and longitudinal velocities depends principally on the turn-to-turn thermal conduction and there appears to be a single universal correlation constant valid for both conductors, NbTi and Nb3Sn.
