Ru-modified Pt(100) surfaces: Effect of annealing on the adsorption of CO as monitored by Infrared Reflection Absorption Spectroscopy (IRAS) in ultrahigh vacuum

Time-resolved IRAS spectra were collected during the adsorption of CO at 105K on Ru-modified Pt(100) (Ru/Pt) surfaces prepared by chemical vapor deposition in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV). Two linear CO-stretching features centered at about 2085-2100 cm -1 and 2068-2092 cm -1 were identified over a wide range of CO exposures on a Ru/Pt surface initially θ Ru = 0.52, as determined by XPS, and attributed to CO adsorption on bare Pt(100) and Ru-induced Pt sites, respectively. Changes in the relative magnitudes of these features were observed following annealing of θ Ru = 0.52 Ru/Pt surface at 2.5h intervals, while the amount of Ru detected by XPS remained constant. Plots of the IRAS spectra obtained after each annealing step displayed an isosbestic point consistent with a progressive interconversion of the two adsorption sites identified on the initially prepared surface. This behavior was attributed to a thermally-induced surface incorporation of Ru into Pt, as evidenced from low energy ion scattering spectroscopy (LEISS) for other Ru-modified low index single crystal Pt surfaces (Davies, et al. Electrochim. Acta. 1998, 44, 1181).
