Preliminary screening of mutagens was completed within 10 h by using a microbial electrode system composed of an oxygen electrode and a membrane filter retaining Salmonella typhimurium revertant. The current decrease was correlated with mutagen concentrations. The minimum measurable concentration for AF-2 was 0.001 µg mL-1. The microbial electrode system was applied to the detection of other chemical mutagens such as N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine, nltrofurazone methyl methanesulfonate, and ethyl methanesulfonate.
