Self-walking gel

    A study was conducted to develop a novel biomimetic walking-gel actuator made of synthetic polymer. The gel that was prepared, had a cyclic reaction network, which acted as a metabolic process within itself. The process caused it to undergo autonomous swelling-deswelling oscillations. The periodic self-oscillating motion of the gel was produced by dissipating chemical energy from an oscillating reaction, called BZ reaction. The reactants consisted of organic acids, such as citric or malonic acid, as an oxidizing agent, along with a metal catalyst. It was found that biomimetic actuators, with persistaltic motion, ciliary motion, or rotational motion can be made by utilizing the locomotion of a locally swelling region coupled with the propagation of chemical wave of the self-oscillating gel.
