Simulation of parachute dynamics during control line input operations

An approach for the numerical simulation of parachute fluid-structure interactions is highlighted. Numerical examples are presented demonstrating the fluid-structure interaction behavior for a steerable round parachute and for a parachute soft-landing retraction system. For the fluid dynamics simulations, we use the Deforming-Spatial-Domain/Stabilized Space-Time (DSD/SST) formulation which was developed for flow problems with moving boundaries and interfaces,1 along with an automatic mesh update method and occasional remeshing of the fluid mesh. The structural dynamics simulations utilize a finite element formulation based on the principle of virtual work for a cable-membrane tension structure.2.
