Simulation studies on the detection efficiency for a phoswich detector with background rejection capability

Simulation studies were performed on calculation of the detection efficiency for a phoswich detector with background rejection capability for continuous blood sampling system. The detector consists of a plastic scintillator, a BGO scintillator, and a photo-multiplier tube (PMT). The pulse shape information is used to distinguish whether the detected event is a true event or a background one. First, we calculated the transmission efficiency of the positron in the tube. And we calculated the detection efficiency of positrons detected by the plastic scintillator. We also calculated the detection efficiency of 511keV gamma photons by the BGO. By combining these three results, the absolute efficiency was calculated. Simulated system detection efficiencies of the positron solutions for O-15, Ga-68 and F-18 were 27%, 30% and 3.3%, respectively. The results by the simulation showed relatively good agreement with the experiment. The simulation developed in this work will be helpful for estimation of the optimized dimension of the phoswich detector such for blood sampling systems as well as positron intra-operative probes.
