The Kintaikyo Bridge is a historically significant bridge in Japan. Field tests and an inspection of the bridge in 1998 indicated minor problems, which was water penetration from the roadway above and localized decay of woods. An assessment showed the arch ribs to be slightly deteriorated. The new Kintaikyo Bridge was rebuilt with a view to a conservation recommendation based on the field tests, in which the structural characteristics of the Kintaikyo Bridge were identified with the help of strain measurements.
