Steel is the main material for bridge structures with long history, and plays an important part in bridge construction. However, corrosion is the weakness of steel bridge, affects the development of steel bridges. The emergence and usage of weathering steel, compensate the weakness of material for bridges, and renew the development of steel bridges. Weathering steel is widely used in bridge engineering with higher corrosion resistance and lower life-cycle cost. The corrosion mechanism and corrosion status of weathering steel were obtained through previously atmospheric corrosion tests. The time-dependent performance is evaluated by appearance assessment, image processing analysis and thickness measurement of rust layer. The checking frequency and contents, maintenance proceeding were determined according to the evaluation grade. Maintenance management system was built to provide the reference to the operation and development of weathering steel bridges.
