N2 - The optimum signal format for long-haul 40 Gbit/s-based wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems was discussed. The filtered signals had more tolerance for the dispersion compensation error although the asymmetrical filtered signals had more tolerance for the fiber nonlinearity. It was found that the bandlimited CS-RZ with highly efficient forward error correction (FEC) of between 80% and 90% code rates was a suitable solution for ultralarge-capacity long-haul 40 Gbit/s WDM systems.
