Subjective evaluation of reduction in the number of loudspeakers in a boundary surface control system

We have examined the feasibility of a 3D sound reproduction system based on the boundary surface control principle (BoSC system). To put this system to practical use, we investigated the effect of a reduction in the number of loudspeakers on the performance of the system. Two algorithms based on the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization scheme were used to select the number and arrangement of the loudspeakers. For the use of these algorithms, 24 and 40 channels were selected, and then, four loudspeaker arrangements were determined. In a subjective evaluation experiment, these four arrangements were compared with an original BoSC system that has 62-channel loudspeakers. Music, speech signals, and environmental sounds were reproduced and used as stimuli in the experiment.
