N2 - Poly(1,3-cyclohexadiene) star-shaped homopolymers were prepared by the living anionic polymerization of 1,3-cyclohexadiene and subsequent convergent coupling with divinylbenzene (DVB). The addition of DVB to the poly(1,3-cyclohexadienyllithium) anion was rapid as observed by the rapid formation of the red color associated with the highly delocalized DVB anion. High conversions were obtained using a 12:1 molar ratio of DVB to n-butyllithium. The polymers exhibited number average molecular weights exceeding 180,000 g/mole and relatively narrow molecular weight distributions. The solubility characteristics of the star polymers were different compared to homopolymers presumably due to the higher molecular weights.
