N2 - Liquid crystalline polyesters based on hexane diol, dimethyl-4,4′-biphenyldicarboxylate, and various levels of dimethyl-5-sodiosulfoisophthalate (SDMI) were prepared using conventional melt polymerization processes. The presence of the ionic functionality was confirmed using solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis indicated a maximum in the isotropic transition temperature against mole percent ionic modification at approximately 8-10 mole percent. Thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated the effect of the ionic functionality on the thermal stability of the liquid crystalline polyesters.
