Phenoxy radical-substituted polythiophenes were synthesized via the oxidative polymerization of their radical precursor monomers and the chemical oxidation. Micrometer-sized comb-shape gold electrodes bearing different electrode length and pitches were fabricated. Electric conductive characteristic of the radical polymers and their precursors were measured with the electrodes. Electric conductivity of the hydroxyl precursor polymer 1a and 2a were ca. 10-9 and 10-10 S/cm, respectively. On the other hand, that of the radical-substituted polythiophenes 1b and 2b were ca. 10-8 and 10-6 S/cm, respectively. The results revealed that radical generation increased the conductivity of polymers. We discuss the effect of radicals upon the polymer conductivity by using the polythiophenes with different radical concentration and their analogues. Temperature- and magnetic field-dependence of the electric conductive characteristics are also reported.
