Synthesis of TiAl-Al 2 Ti 4 C 2 composite by reaction milling

Synthesis of fine TiAl-Al 2 Ti 4 C 2 composites has been conducted by mechanical alloying of Ti-Al-heptane system, followed by hot compaction. The reaction forming TiC during milling is enhanced by the premilling of metal powders prior to the contact with heptane. After hot consolidation, a fine composite of TiAl and Al 2 Ti 4 C 2 of an average grain size of a few hundreds nm is obtained. The effects of process parameters on the reaction and mechanical properties at elevated temperatures of the composite are described.
