As part of the second-phase of Japanese national research project for energy conservation in multi-component petroleum distillation, the application of commercial scale distillation column of HIDiC (Heat Integrated Distillation Column) was studied. This column operated in the same condition of existing conventional distillation column, which capacity of distillation was 1650 kg/hr as feed, separating cyclopentane from 12 multi-component mixture of mainly CS hydrocarbon products from naphtha cracking plant. In the case of the ideal and successive operation regarding the zero load of reboiler, 63.5% of energy saving were achieved, and 56.6 kg/hr of reduction for CO2 emission in comparison with the same capacity of conventional distillation column, and 8 yr of depreciation were estimated for the construction cost. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 8th World Congress of Chemical Engineering (Montreal, Quebec, Canada 8/23-27/2009).
