N2 - Au (111) electrodes have been emersed from sulphuric acid solutions and their surfaces studied in UHV by LEED, RHEED and AES. It is shown that, after evacuation, sulphuric acid forms an ordered two-dimensional overlayer on Au (111), the structure of which bears some relation to that of crystalline H2SO4. This H2SO4 overlayer, which is independent of the emersion potential, does not remove the (1 × 23) surface reconstruction of Au (111).
